At Semarang Multinational School, we are using International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC), a new research-based Early Years curriculum for ages 2-5+ from Fieldwork Education.
The IEYC Learning Strands are considered appropriate for the age-range of 2-5 years, however the IEYC can be extended to include older children in settings and countries where early years’ education goes beyond the age of five. The IEYC is a perfect tool for the transition phase between early and formal education.
This curriculum will be divided into 2 phases, Phase A & Phase B. However, there is no “official” age range connected to Phase A/B experiences; this reflects the non-linear nature of learning and development for children at this age. Phase A outlines learning experiences with the youngest children in mind, whilst Phase B outlines learning experiences that provide more of a challenge.
Some settings find it useful to consider Phase A learning experiences typically suited to 2 and 3 year olds and Phase B learning experiences typically suited to 4 and 5 year olds, but this is only a general reference – you know your children best!
The IEYC will also works very well in mixed-age classes because differentiation is already planned for teachers within Phase A and B activities to address children who are at different developmental stages.
